Who are we?The band is a village band and draws most its members from the parish. Although the band has entered contests in the past and will probably also enter them in the future, most of the membership play simply because they enjoy making music. There are no auditions before joining; if someone is keen to join us then that is the primary requirement. However, the band plays to a standard much higher than would be expected from a village band.
The band also has an active training programme and many of the current band members are products of this programme. Anyone of any age is eligible to take part in this and, while learning, may have the use of a band instrument.
The band is conducted by Tim Crouter who has been involved in brass bands for many years. Apart from his ability as a conductor, he is also a very fine tuba player. Tim began his banding with Hyde and then Verwood bands culminating in being M.D. of Verwood Concert Brass in his early 20’s. He then had periods of 3 years each in the Tuba sections of both Woodfalls and Sun Life learning much from the best band trainers in the business.
Since 1992 Tim has been a freelance brass and woodwind teacher in the Swindon area and has worked for Swindon Young Musicians and many local schools.
Tim has directed Wantage, Aldbourne, and Rogerstone Bands and has been with Hungerford since 1994 having taken them to the National Finals three times in 5 years.
In 1998 he graduated at the University of Sheffield having completed a B.A. in Band Studies under the direction of Richard Evans.
2007 sees Tim directing the East Woodhay Silver Band along with his continuing involvement with Hungerford Town Band.
